It Is Always Your Choice

Dear Collective,

Everything we do and every way we react is a choice.

I was driving down the road the other day and apparently I cut someone off. Honestly, I couldn't tell you if I actually did. Maybe I missed something, maybe I didn't. But I have never seen a person get so animated just to show me their middle finger.

This guy was so ready to ruin everything just to make sure I saw that finger next to his index. It was so intense that when I shifted over to the left lane to make a turn, he actually flew through a red light just to keep flicking me off.

I’ve never forgotten that moment. It was fascinating to watch someone get so mad, so quickly, over something so small that they felt they had to risk a wreck just to prove a point.

He chose to speed. He chose to run the light. I chose to give him a thumbs down, which seemed to make him even more upset. But at the end of the day, it was all a series of choices.

The event happened. Maybe it wasn't fair. Maybe you’re the person who gets cut off or the person who gets blamed for something you didn't do. You can’t always control the event, but you are the only one in control of what occurs next.

Hard work is a choice. Sleeping in or getting up is a choice. Your attitude is a choice. Discipline and excellence are choices.

Most of the time, we act like we’re just passengers in our own lives, waiting to see how the day treats us. But you’re the driver. If you’re having a rough morning, you can choose to see better things throughout the day. You can decide right now that the next hour is going to be better than the last one, and it probably will be.

Don't give away your power to some guy in traffic or a bad mood you woke up with. You get to pick your reaction. You get to pick your effort.

This week, I want you to look at the moments where you feel like you "have" to react a certain way and realize you don't.

  • Choose the better attitude.

  • Choose the harder work.

  • Choose to be in control.

You’re the one holding the wheel. Decide where you’re going.

With Strength and Discipline,

Charlie We, The Collective Fitness
