None Of It’s In My Comfort Zone
Dead Collective,
In Buffalo, Connor Price and Nic D build the track around multisyllabic slant rhymes with the word “buffalo.” In hip-hop, a slant rhyme pairs words that sound alike without matching exactly. When Eminem was challenged to rhyme with “orange,” for example, he quickly offered “door hinge.” “Foreign” and “snoring” work similarly.
It is a clever display of skill, but one line stayed with me:
"Got everything I wanted in abundance, yeah, I did it, I done it.
And found none of it in my comfort zone."
It reminded me that growth rarely happens inside a comfort zone. Rest matters, but it should prepare us for the next challenge, not keep us from it.
Your goal will not pursue itself, and the work will not get done unless you do it. Life will sometimes feel uncomfortable, and that can be a good thing.
A comfort zone feels safe, predictable, and warm. There is nothing wrong with returning to it; rest is necessary, and no one can operate at full intensity every day. But think about the moments that make you proud. You may reflect on them from the couch, but you probably did not create them there.
We do not build muscle by wishing the weights would lift themselves, and we do not improve our abilities by choosing the easiest setting. Growth requires resistance, and resistance begins beyond the comfort zone.
I learned this firsthand. Years ago, I joined Thunder Soccer hoping to meet clients and grow my personal-training business. “Creativity is high when the budget low” I had always been reluctant to put myself out there and was honestly afraid to talk to people. That discomfort still shows up, even when I go on a date.
I was only a few months removed from a disappointing job, and any income was better than none. After my first season, parents asked me to return, and I joined a recreational team as an assistant coach. I began by leading a few drills; before long, I could run an entire practice.
Then I was invited to join the board as referee coordinator. I was not even a big soccer/fútbol guy, but I knew the basic rules, so I earned my referee certification. (Side note: it is “offside,” not “offsides.”) When the league needed a youth coach, I stepped into that role too. By then, whenever a path appeared, I took it, scared or not.
Today, I serve as president of that league. “I’m sorry, the more I win, the more the hunger grows".
I did not get there by waiting until I felt ready. I got there by stepping into discomfort, accepting each challenge, and learning along the way.
“Complain about the climate like it's up in smoke
When the truth is, you planted the seed then never watered it
And ended up talkin' about how nothin' grows”
If you want different results, better health, stronger habits, or a fuller life, you must be willing to feel some discomfort. Stepping beyond your comfort zone is not failure; it is the cost of meaningful progress.
Celebrate each time you step into the unknown.
Your proudest moments are waiting outside your comfort zone.
With strength and good habits,
Charlie
